Week 2 Weigh In: Importance of Breakfast

A friend of mine who is also a reader noticed that on Day 12 and Day 13 I did not eat breakfast. She reminded me that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. She is right. I don't typically don't function well without breakfast and my cup o' caffeine (latte or black tea). If I skip it I get a headache and/or really cranky.

I love breakfast foods while Hubs can eat ANYTHING for breakfast (even salad).

As a Filipino I was raised on eggs, rice and longgonisa. It is such a comfort food for me. To this day my mom still makes it for me if I come over for breakfast.

I have never craved "sweet" breakfasts (pancakes or waffles), but I enjoy them if set in front of me. My favorite breakfast in college was a bagel with cream cheese (and I wonder where I got my Freshman 15 pounds came from).

Now that I am in my 30s and a mom my metabolism simply doesn't allow me to indulge in a yummy breakfast. I work full time and Little 'Ny is in day care, so a sit down breakfast is not in the daily schedule either. So, what is on my breakfast menu: a cup of Smart Start cereal or Quaker Instant Oatmeal.

Leave me a comment if you have any other "grab and go" breakfast recommendations?

Will power ... where did you go?

I used to have incredible will power. Hubs used to be amazed that I could cut a candy bar in half -- eat one half and put the other half in the fridge for another day. If we were out to dinner no matter how much I liked my food I would only eat so much knowing that I had to leave room for dessert.

Since I had Little 'Ny that will power has completely disappeared.

Now, I eat the whole candy bar. I can't leave the store without buying some form of chocolate. It is horrible. Some way, some how I need to get that will power back.

(No body, you cannot have that handful of M&Ms you keep asking for.)

Weight Watchers Dropout

When I was a kid getting pounds on me was impossible. I was petite in ever sense of the word. I was a very picky eater and a dancer (ballet, tap and jazz). My dad is a health nut as well as a black belt in Tang Soo Do. At 65 years old still works out 5 days a week and plays/walks 18 holes of golf once a week. My mom was so skinny as a young woman, but at 32 she had me and has been battling her weight ever since then.

Up until I delivered my daughter I did cardio & lifted weights 3 days a week and practiced yoga 5 days a week. I am a full time working mom and breadwinner of my household. I yet to find the right balance of my time for work, exercise, food and family. Now here I am, 32 years old with a 2.5 year old daughter and I find my self battling the same weight gain war my mother has been.

During my pregnancy I was careful of my diet since high blood pressure runs in my family. I nursed for over a year and continued my "pregnancy diet". The pounds dripped right off. Once I stopped nursing the pounds stopped decreasing ... on the contrary, they increased. Now, I am 35 pounds over my ideal weight.

Last month I signed up for a free trial of Weight Watchers Online. But, I hate dieting ... I hate counting points ... I hate scales. My mom is a WW member and has a friend she attends meetings with keeping her on track. I asked my mom if she could pick up some of the "WW tools" to get me started. Like the wonderful mom she is ... she did! So, I canceled my free subscription and opted for this blog.

This blog will serve as my daily journal and my weekly check in. You (my readers) will become the friend who keeps me on track. To keep this blog interesting I will post on other findings and insights I pick along my path to (en)lightening my body. Please support me by reading and commenting often.
